Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a coach from outside my organisation and not just get coaching from my manager?

The benefit of using a coach from outside the organisation is that it enables confidential, open conversations and increases the effectiveness of coaching.  The relationship in coaching is key and it is challenging to expect a direct report to open up about their true challenges (both personally and professionally) to a direct manager who is using coaching skills, given this manager may then be responsible for their performance and pay review in weeks to come.

How is coaching different from Mentoring and Consulting?

Coaching is supporting you to find your own ‘AHAH’ moments and encouraging you to achieve your goals using your own actions.  As coaches we believe you have the answers within you and help you realise this to succeed.

Mentors and consultants provide their knowledge about how they did things in the past or how others have done things.  They use this to advise you what you should do for the future.  The challenge with this is that naturally people don’t then own the actions themselves but rather say this is what they were told to do.  There is no buy in to make sure it succeeds as there is an easy excuse that it was someone else’s idea not yours.  Also as it was not your idea you may not fully understand it and this makes it difficult to remember and execute.  Often businesses therefore get over reliant on mentors and consultants rather than embedding the power in their own teams through coaching.

“Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind.” Plato

Will coaching be successful for me?

In many ways that is up to you, what level of effort are you willing to put in to make it succeed?  You are most likely to succeed if we build a great rapport and trust that enables you to be:

·       open to new ideas and new perspectives

·       excited and curious when you realise you are not understanding something

·       willing to be completely wrong and enjoy this as it gives you the opportunity to learn

·       unwilling to let things stay as they are

Is everything I tell you confidential?

Yes, we act with total professionalism and you can share everything in complete confidence.  The coach will take notes during the session and you are able to see these.  Notes are only kept to assist the coach better help you and will not be shared with anyone else without your permission.  The coach has a legal obligation to speak to a third party if they believe any serious crime or harm has been or is likely to be caused to any person.

How many sessions will I need?

Each person and situation is different so we will need to talk about what will best work for you.  Let’s talk.

Are sessions on-line?

With clients in various locations online is normally the most efficient way to coach.  Face to face coaching is available if it suits both of us.

How long is each coaching session?

The first free introduction session is normally 30 minutes.  The sessions that follow that will normally be 60 minutes unless agreed otherwise.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, all sessions are by appointment and prepaid.
